Baobab trees are found across the African continent, as well as Madagascar. They are recognized for their unusual shape. With their barrel-like trunks and branches that look like roots, it is easy to see why they are often referred to as the “Upside-Down” trees. Their water-storing trunks, allow them to survive in the arid conditions of sub-Saharan Africa. They can live for thousands of years growing to great heights, which is why they are also referred to as the “Tree of Life”. Traditionally, the trees have been valued by the African people as a source of food, water, natural remedies and shelter.
Culturally they are part of many folktales. One such legend, is that the tribes living along the Zambezi River believed that the gods became angry at the Baobab trees for being too tall and arrogant, so they uprooted them and re-planted them upside-down. Some also believe that if you pick a flower from one of these trees, you will be eaten by a lion.
